I went to see this thing called Drunk Hamlet put on by Dauntless Theatre in Toronto. I went because my friend was playing Hamlet. She took on that task courageously. You see, this wasn’t just regular Hamlet, this was drunk Hamlet. Every time Hamlet enters she’s handed a drink. Every single time. She ends up having so so many drinks – her liver must be screaming.  Hamlet is the only one drinking though – the rest of the cast stays sober and does their best keeping her on task.

She did well. When we got to intermission she was starting to unravel, then after intermission things got ridiculous. And by ridiculous, I mean awesome. She knew the gist, but the words eluded her, so she would end up filling things in in modern language….drunk modern language.

The whole night was fun, light hearted, and full of laughs. Honestly, I love Shakespeare done like this. I love it when it’s not precious and it’s not taken seriously. I love it when the words are to entertain and have a great time, and when we’re not bogged down by the language.

So moral of the story? If you’re in Toronto, go see the Drunk Shakespears shows. And if you’re not, start them in your city because it’s the best.
