Motivated by May The 4th Be With You day, I thought about bringing a little of both my favorites things about May 4th into this outfit – Star Wars day and Audrey Hepburn’s birthday.  Don’t see it yet?  Well, the hair is influenced by the braided crown of Princess Leia in Empire Strikes Back on the planet Hoth, and AUdrey Hepburn comes in with a little touch of classic silhouette in the dress, and a general ladylike tone.  Now you see it riiight?

And now you’re also shaking your head, thinking, “Nerd!”

Yup, present and accounted for.

Sometimes children open their mouths, say something, and you’re left standing there wondering where in the world they got that from.

My Girl was playing with blocks, building a tower to be precise, and it fell over.  She huffed, balled her hands into tiny fists and vehement shouted, “Pickles! Oh No!”  My head instantly did a quick swivel in her direction, and I was left thinking, “Huh?”

I decided to do some surveillance.  And sure enough ‘Pickles!’ is the hip, happening swear word among these young, crazy kids.  Well, at least my young, crazy kid.

Where Does The Time Go?

Dress – F21  //  Shoes – I forget  //  Belt – Threadsence  //  Necklace – I forget
A question that’s been on my mind for a few days now.  Somehow,  the summer is over and I’ve got a big girl sleeping in her room.  The pool is closed, and school’s in.  The baby crib is gone, and a double bed is in.  The weather turns cooler, and the days get shorter.  The baby furniture is replaced with “big girl” desk and shelves.
Where does the time go?  I had heat and sun and long days of sun.  I had a baby in a crib that could barely stand.  Now I have crisp and cool breezes.  Now I have a grown up little girl.

Dressember Week Three Link Up

Dress – ModCloth  //  Cardi – H&M  //  Tights – HUE
Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace and Belt – F21
It may be sweet dressing, but I am drawn to big classic floral dresses like this one.  Perhaps my own biting and sarcastic mind is starving to create some sort of balance.  Or perhaps it’s a soft exterior designed to fool and lull into submission.   Whatever the reason, this is the exterior.
Now, let’s see how week three of Dressember went for you.  Link up your post, FB pic or twitter pic.  I’d love to see how things went.  And of course, a link back or button display is much appreciated.

The Fantasy Does Not Become Reality

This is the fashion blogger I sometimes fantasize I am.

But then, just like that blurred head in the foreground of the photo, reality infringes.
And this is the fashion blogger I really am.

I’m okay with that.

Tee – Gap
Belt – Spotted Moth
Dress worn as Skirt – Guess

Windy And Animated

Skirt – c/o Emerging Thoughts; Top – hand me down; Cardi – Tulle from Ruche; Hair Bow – Ruche; Belt – F21; Tights – Hue; Boots – Locale.

Have you guys checked out Emerging Thoughts? This store has some seriously cool stuff there like this Tapestry Coat that I’m totally drooling over, or the Reality Bites Dress!  I want that dress just because it reminds me of the seminal film of my youth, you know what I’m talking about all you Ethan Hawke fans.  And for all us Canadian shoppers, they have really affordable shipping.  Bonus!

When I got this Uncle Phuncle skirt in the mail I was so excited to wear it because it has so many wonderful elements working for it.  It’s a clean simple grey color *and you know, that’s my ‘black’* it has a cute little bow, but it’s not too big, and it has a bit of a pouf but again, just the right amount.  Actually, that’s the first two things people said about – that it’s classic and poufy but just the right amount.   I have to say that I’m a big fan. My suggestion?  Hop your butts over to Emerging Thoughts and get yourself some of their sweet stuff.

Oh and what do you think of the animation?  It’s the first time I’ve used it, and it won’t become a regular feature, but for some reason it felt appropriate for the two photos used.  It was just a crazy photo taking moment with the wild wind and Baby chatting away, some movement had to be involved in this post!

True Story:
Baby has just discovered that when she closes her eyes
and covers them with her hands she’s, “Gone! Gone!”
Don’t worry, she can come back.
She just takes her hands off her eyes.

Detoxing

Top & Skirt – hand me down; Belt – F21; Shoes – Lulus.com

Hello beautiful people!  How I’ve missed you.  I’m finally feeling much better and my energy is almost completely up.  So, I’ll be back to my regularily scheduled posting. I’m also part of am amazing project launching on Monday, but I’ll give you those details tomorrow.

It’s bright and sunny outside and I can’t wait to get out there with Baby and play in the park.  I’ve started a full body detox so I am having a few rough days as the worst part of the detox is right at the beginning, and my skin is going wild with acne.  But I know at the end it’ll be so worth it when I’m healthier and more energetic, and my skin will be a whole lot better too.  Have you changed anything recently?  Notice any difference?

To Trick or Not To Trick?

Dress – vintage from Etsy; Belt – Spotted Moth; Boots – Feet First.

With Halloween coming up, I’ve started wondering.  When should you take your kids out?  I’m not taking Baby out this year because she can’t eat the candy, she probably wouldn’t understand or appreciate it, and she’ll probably get overwhelmed and/or scared of the whole thing and all the frightening sounds.  I want to take her out when she can understand and appreciate the whole fun process and know that it’s not real – just fun.  But that’s where I’m coming from.  What do you guys think?  When did you take your babes out for the first time?

And on the flip side, when do you let your kids go out alone?  I read this article in the Globe and Mail and found it quite interesting food for thought.  What age should we be trusting our babes out alone?  9,10, 11? Finally, when do you think the cut-off for trick or treating should be?  When are you too old to trick or treat?

These are certainly some things I have never considered before becoming a parent.  And now that I’m here, all these decisions are on my mind.  And I try to do what’s right for me, but it’s difficult to hold strong in the face of judgement from other parents who think that what they do is what everyone should do.  Have you experienced this during Halloween too?

Whimsy Of Yellow

Pins – c/o Blue Eyed Owl; Cardi – Gap; Dress – Ruche; Top – H&M; Belt – F21; Tights – Hue; Boots – Threadsence.

I’ve been eyeing the lovely shade of mustard yellow that’s so popular for fall.  It’s such a warm, rich color that is just so appealing.  But I can’t wear yellow. Or rather I don’t – not “can’t.”  If you put me in something yellow or yellow toned, not only does it wash me out, but I look like I have some severe stage of jaundice.  I think it’s the combination of my very fair skin and the olive undertones that run throughout it. So when Liz contacted me with the opportunity to select and try out some of her delightful handmade accessories I yipped with glee when I saw that the Mustard & Cobalt Pinwheel Bobby Pin set had just the yellow I’ve been craving.  And to top it all off I had just nabbed this belt for $3, so putting to two together just seemed to make sense.

These are beautifully made and I adore the whimsy of pinwheels in my hair.  It makes me feel like I’m going to have a soft breeze caressing my hair.   Her shop has some really pretty things, like these earrings and this lovely pin/ brooch.  I think it would look stunning as a decorative piece in a fun messy updo.  Personally, I’m pleased as punch that I can satisfy my yellow craving while avoiding looking like an extra on AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

‘Wife’ And Other Ruminations

Sweater – Ruche; Dress – Coco&Tashi; Socks – Hue; Shoes – Payless; Belt – Covet.

I was reading an article on the meaning of the word wife in the Globe and Mail, in which the writer speaks of the connotations of the word and how women are either resistant to it or embracing of it.  Everything she points out is true: it used to deny women rights, it has certain anti-feminist connotations even today, some people are embracing it in a new way.  But what she forgets to mention is “husband.”  She says that being a ‘wife’ is limiting and implies a role that’s subservient, but also how women are taking back the word, though many are wary of it.  But though the word ‘wife’ may be intimidating because of past expectations, so is the modern word ‘husband’ because of modern expectations. In the past the husband was the king of the castle who owned his wife and children.  Not anymore.

The modern ‘husband’ is expected to treat his wife equally *of course*, be supportive, not dominating at all *sometimes men are so afraid of this label that they become doormats*, chivalrous *but not cross over into patronizing*, father, role-model, homemaker *at least half of the time*, and bread winner *at least half the time*.  They have to redefine what it means to be a man and a husband.  It’s a task as hard as defining what it means to be a woman and wife.  We should all cut ourselves some slack and take it easy on both ‘husbands’ and ‘wives.’
