“Receiving the true attention of another is always the best kind of food. Someone who responds automatically is not truly present in the relationship, but acting passively, out of conditioning or a sense of duty. His partner often feels a flatness and emptiness, a sense that the person is not really there.” – Zen and the art of Falling in Love.

Phones, distractions, and whatever else keeps you from focusing on them. That’s what will kill you. Walking away because you’re mind is somewhere else – literally or figuratively leaves the other empty. This is especially true for women, who have consistently cited ‘attention’ as one of the top reason for seeking love outside the relationship. But regardless of gender, we all need to be seen and listened to as valued partners. Otherwise, get a cat.
