Chasing a toddler around the house to get cuddles is one of my favorite activities.  It’s a little bit of joy to get the kisses and hugs, and it’s a little bit of vengence too.

See, they make you do things you’re not keen on all the time, and bugging them back a little to get something you want is a tiny little parental rebellion.

I was engaging in this activity, while saying, “Give me some sugar!”

Suddenly, she stopped dead in her tracks, turned to me.  Gave me a death stare and a super cute toddler furrowed brow, “No!  No sugar for you Mama!”

I tried to looked appropriately put in my place.  Managed to hold it until she turned her back, at which point I giggled silently to myself at being reprimanded by a three year old.

Andrew turns to Baby Girl and asks, “What would you like in your carrot muffins?  Pineapple or raisin?”

She answers, “Carrots!”

He asks,”Yes, but pineapple or raisins?”

“Carrots!”

“You want carrots in your carrot muffins?”

“Yes, Da-ddy!” she replies rather irritated now that he’s asking such an obvious question.

You obviously put carrots, else they would not be carrot muffins.  Geez, Dads apparently have a lot of learning to do.

Cry For Help

Lace Kimono – Lush  //  Long Cardigan – Cecico  //  Dress  –  unknown, I altered it myself  //  Tights – Hansel From Basel  //  Socks – unknown  //  Boots – Aldo  //  Necklace – unknown  //  Belt – F21

Instead of my regular post I’m writing a cry for help today.  I’m
serious.  I’m being held hostage.  She’s short, and blond, and has a bit
of a lisp.  She also sucks her thumb and can currently be found wearing
a bright blue and pink fairy costume. Call for help.

She
makes me build blocks endlessly, and dance and twirl until I can’t take
it anymore.  I think she might be a little sadistic too since she
smiles and giggles as I twirl or build again despite my momentary
resistance.

And that’s another matter.  I have no resistance.  I build and twirl and dance on command as she laughs. Laughs I tell you.

Call Child Protective Services please.  I’m desperate.  They protect you from children right??

Two Hours of My Life

Two hours.  Two hours that I could’ve spent running, then having a massage.  Two hours I could’ve been curled up with my favorite book.   Two hours I could’ve gone shopping, or had lunch with some girlfirends and laughed.

Nope.  Instead, it was two hours spent trudging through fabric stores.  Two hours spent rubbing fabric after fabric on my cheek to test it’s softness and silkiness.  Two hours spent cursing at the weather, and got hungrier in search of the elusive fabric.  Two hours.

Those two hours I could’ve watched a movie, drank wine, and had my feet rubbed.  No, instead I spent two hours going from store to store to find the perfect fabric to patch up that 23 year old piece of scrap blankie because some short blond girl looked at me with sad, puppy dog eyes and said, “Mommy, oh no!  My blankie has a hole.”

What I wouldn’t do for her.

This morning I made myself tea.  My delicious and gourmet Davids Tea.
I sat down on the couch with a magazine in one hand and my steaming cup in the other.

I read that magazine.

My kid and my husband fought over what to have for breakfast.  He won by the way.  Then she threw a tantrum and he told her to sit in the time out corner.  She didn’t  She ran up the stairs, making a big show of it, and went into her room.  Her very own act of defiance.  He followed her up in a huff and closed the door to her room.  She freaked out because the door was closed.  He came down and cooled off.  She calmed down after a while.  He went up and she apologized.  They came downstairs.

Then a fight erupted over the laundry he was folding.  Honestly, I stopped paying attention. I was trying really hard not to pay attention.  I sat there and read that magazine.  I don’t know what it was about, but I read it.   From front to end.

Last week, our power went out for four days due to the ice storm that hit Toronto, and Southern Ontario.  Then, just as the power came back on, on Christmas Day, my baby girl came down with the stomach flu.  So while nursing her and throwing out all the food in our fridge, we wished ourselves a Merry Christmas.  Once she finally started getting better, I started vomiting with the same stomach flu, and spent a happy birthday on the couch or…well…doing that vomiting thing.  Of course, I had just stopped and was still really weak, when Andrew got it.  Which brings us up to now.

Hard to believe it was all just one week.

That’s the reason I’ve been absent here.  As reasons go, I think it’s pretty good.  I hope you all had a much better holiday than us.  And I wish us all a fabulous New Year!

Salut!

My Kid Deals Out Mommy Crack

When your kid’s throwing a huge tantrum, or just plain being demanding, when you haven’t slept, or eaten because you’ve been running ragged, and when they’ve fallen *or whatever* despite being told four dozen times not to do it or “You’ll hurt yourself,” that’s when you pick them up and hope that it makes them quiet for a moment.

And that’s when they dose you.  Don’t be fooled.  It’s not an accident, and it’s not coincidental.  I’m firmly convinced that my kid knows exactly when to release that smell.  The one on the top of their heads.  You know the one I’m talking about.  The one that sends you into perfect relaxation and bliss.   The one that makes you love them and feel like being with them is Nirvana. I don’t know what the technical term for it is, but I like to think of it as “Mommy crack.”

She’s got it down to a fine art.  She’s got it timed.  She knows exactly when her Mama needs her next fix so as to not go completely off the rails.  She’s my drug dealer, and she’s also the supply.  So I can’t cut out the middleman in this.

The drug is the middle man.

What Rules!?: Loose Woman

Pants – Skies Are Blue  //  Shirt – Gap  //  Sweater – Jana  //  Shoes – H&M  //  Necklace and earrings – old and I forget
There was this old belief in the 50s that you if you wore high heels with cropped pants you had loose morals.  So, one rule for ladies was that you never did so.  Today, this clearly loose woman *what with the Husband and child* is breaking the rule of wearing cropped pants with high heels.
Except that for some reason my cropped pants look like full length pants in these shots.  Perhaps it was the fact that I was hunching and withdrawn as the icy wind blew in my face? Made me about 4 inches shorter.
And I’d like to mentioned that I had an audience of six while taking these shots – construction workers that are tearing up our street gave me more than a few eyebrows, from under their hats and big parkas, as they watched the crazy lady with her tripod.
So maybe I’m not loose, just weird?
I’m okay with that.
Next week, I’ll be mixing leopard with plaid.  So if you want to do that, feel free and leave your link in the comments of next weeks post.

You Want Something Done, Do It Yourself

You know that old saying, right?  Well, I’ve been coveting a few awesome fringe kimonos, but with price tags upwards of one hundred dollars on the ones that I want it was never gonna happen.  I budget and live within my means, and those means do not include hundred dollar kimonos.  So, I thought, “You want one?  Make it happen.”

Browsing through this huge fabric warehouse not too far from home, I stumbled across this gorgeous gray chiffon fabric and had one of those butterfly in the stomach moments.  It was the perfect material with it’s soft gray and white leaf print with specks of blue, and subtle silver sparkle.  Done.

The roll firmly tucked under my arm, I promptly waded through the fringe bin and found this long, soft, ivory fringe to match.  Copying another kimono that had been a gift from my mom, I then starting cutting and sewing.

The weight of the fringe as it swings back and forth while walking.  There’s something very satisfying about that.

Total price tag – $32.  That’s more like it.

Persistence is The Key To Rebelliousness

Sometimes things are harder than you think they are.  Sometimes you’re not prepared for the challenges that will arise.  And sometimes you just have to give it time and hope that the idea you had is enough to generate interest and to spurn a spirit of creativity.  Yes, last weeks first link up of rule breaking fashion was frankly a bit of a disappointment.  I had hoped to see more people there, but the people who were there were spectacular!  I visited every single one.

It’s a good idea for us to intentionally break fashion ‘rules’ and to have a good time doing it.  So I’m going to persist in it.  I’ll post the link tool every week, and I hope you’ll join me.  *tomorrow we’re wearing red lipstick during the day, if you’re wondering*  If not, at least I’ll have some fun breaking another rule every week.  ‘Cause you know I’m oh so dangerous, and such a rule breaker.
