Lace Dress – c/o  SheInside  //  Plaid Shirt – AE  //  Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace – Ruche  //  Earrings – F21

I’ve been wanting a tutu style skirt for quite a while.  But when I found this crochet and tutu combo dress on SheInside, my search came to an end.  The little embroidered detailing on the skirt, along with the the shirt and boots make me feel like some kind of cowgirl princess.  Not a combo you think of naturally, but hey if it works it works, am I right?

Now all I need is a hat, horse, and some kick butt pistols….you see I’m not the cowboy-rides-in-on-a-white-horse-to-save-me type…I’ll do the saving, thank you.

“Mama,” I hear the whisper.  My eyes open slightly and lying next to me is that little girl I love.  She crawled into bed with me.

“It’s still sleepy time,” I say to her.  A tiny hand drapes over my neck as she cuddles in and I fall asleep.

Half an hour later I wake up, alone. I get up in search of her.  She’s not in her room.  I head downstairs.  When I walk into the living room I see her, sitting crossed legged on the couch, beading.  She looks up at me, “You up?”

“Yes,” I say and sit.  That’s when I notice it.  While I slept, she took off her night diaper, put on her underwear *albeit backwards*, and selected a pair of shorts, which she then donned *albeit coming in from one leg hole so that the waist is actually servicing as her left pant leg*, then went downstairs and started her day.

I know it’s small, but somehow those little acts made me realize how she’s growing up.

Tied &Dyed Scarf – c/o Kish and Evie  //  Jeans – Dittos  //  Shirt – Hem&Thread via Ruche //  Shoes – Threadsence  // Jacket & Necklaces – F21  //  Purse – UO

I know I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again:  I have the best readers in the world.  You guys are so smart, sassy, talented, and in the case of Kish and Evie ridiculously amazing online shop owners! This duo based out of Australia makes some amazing hand crafted scarves.  Their pieces are so intricate and detailed, but there’s so much thought put into each piece.

This Tied&Dyed scarf was the perfect piece to take me into the summer.  I wanted something bold, bright, and yet still soft and flowy to take into these warmer months.  Something that spoke of happy and fun filled days.  The soft, luxurious material is sensual and light – exactly what you want out of a great scarf.

Take the case of one of my other favorites, the Dia De Los Muertos, there’s thought and storytelling involved in the creation of the scarf.  So it becomes more than a piece of fabric you don, it becomes an entire story and world that you take on as a part of yourself.  I love that.  Seriously, it’s on my wishlist of items to curate for my wardrobe – to have and to cherish for years on end.  Each time, discovering a little bit of the story and making it part of my own.

Kish and Evie are offering an international giveaway on their site for three scarves of your choice!  Also, an exclusive coupon to ModaMama readers for 25% off – just enter the code “K+ETHANKYOU” at checkout.

My Baby’s On The Road

That’s right.  My baby’s back on the road.  It’s finally warm enough that I can pull out my bike again.  I am beyond excited.  I love the fact that I can now travel a bit more freely, and get places quicker.  And also excited by the new photo places it opens up to me as well.

It’s been possibly the worst winter here and that first day when the bike gets on the road is a big watershed moment for me.  I love biking around Toronto.   Exercise, books on tape, and the bike on the road.  It’s Spring in Toronto baby!

Pause the News

We don’t have tv in the classic sense.  We have Netflix and networked computers.  So my girl is used to using a keyboard to play her shows and can navigate it pretty well.  So, recently we were watching the news on the three digital channels that we do actually get on tv (from the antenna) and she needed to go to the bathroom.  We got up to go.  She walked over to the keyboard and hit the spacebar, ’cause that’s what she does to pause her shows.

Nothing happened.  She did it again. Nothing. She furrowed her brow and tried one more time.  Then looked at me and said, “Mama, the show’s broken.  It’s not pausing.”

It was one of those moments when you realize that your upbringing and hers is totally different.  She’s so in tune with our tech that to her it makes perfect sense that you can pause all your shows, whereas I never did.  You left, you missed part of the show.

I know it’s a minor difference, but it’s illustrative of the greater differences between being a kid now, and being a kid then.

Transportation and Snack Machines

Some parents worry about their children heading off to school, or daycare, because of the tears their children shed.  I don’t have to worry about that particular thing.

Today, I dropped off the little one at a Kindergarten prep course.  Her very first class, very first time in the building, and very first time meeting these people.  She was off and running away from me before I even got her coat off.  Didn’t look back, not once.

When I came to pick her up the teacher said, “Look who’s here to get you!”  She turned, took one look at me and frowned, “You forgot my snack, ’cause I had snack time!”

Yup, no issues with independence or being left alone.  Really, we’re the transportation and snack providing machinery in her life.

Punk.

You guys all know by now that I’m not a Yoga practitioner. It’s just not my thing.  But I do love a good yoga inspired top, and not just for daily life, but also for my Kung Fu and Tai Chi training times.  This top from YogaOutlet is awesome.  I love the soft muted feminine colors and the stretch and flexibility of the material.  It feels like a cross between ballerina and yoga, but I’m gonna use it to look chic, kill 10Ks, and kick ass.

Of course, this particular day I wore it as part of a relaxing outfit for a day spent lounging and mucking about on my computer.  Which, as we all know, yoga wear is perfect for!

So I suggest checking out YogaOutlet to find those pieces for whatever you enjoy doing, be it dancing, stretching, punching, or doing jigsaw puzzles.

Okay, so remember how I said I wouldn’t venture out into that huge snowfall?  Well, I’m a lying, liar pants on fire, ’cause I ended up doing so.  But only for the two minutes it took to take these shots.  I may be crazy, but even I have my limits…few though they may be.

Side note:  Had a whole night of dreams where I was Jean-Luc Picard’s Number One and we were in command of a fleet of actual naval vessels, on an ocean.  Very odd, but also very cool because, hey, Jean-Luc Picard’s Number One!

When I don’t have time or when I want a bit of a change from the regular, I throw on Shaun T’s Insanity or Asylum, or when in a time crunch the T25, and work out.  I do it on my computer when my girl is up and around.  Most of the time she joins in with me for a good chunk of it, and then sits in the room drawing.

Two days ago, I turned on Insanity and asked her, “You gonna come exercise with Mama?”
She replied with a very concerned look and, “No, ’cause it too hard, and it make me tired.”

She summed up exactly why a lot of people don’t exercise.
But within five minutes she was jumping and lunging away with me.  Her favorite are squats.

Pretty Sure She’s A Vampire

The sun in Winter is rarely seen.  But when it is, it’s a joy and myself and Drake the Dog relish it’s presence in the kitchen.  But not everyone does so.

One sunny morning as the rays hit our kitchen floor, Baby Girl got upset.  Her blocks were in the sun and she wanted them.  She tried to convince me to get them.  When I said no, she begged.  And when I told her she could go get them herself she walked off in a huff.

Moments later she came back, with sunglasses planted on her face.  Walked with determination to get her blocks, and then walked right up to me with a ‘See-What-You-Made-Me-Do’ look in her eyes and said, “Sun hurts my eyes.”

Yup, she’s a vampire.

I’m sleeping with garlic.

She’s also a drama queen.
