Casual Glam with Pleather Pants

Pants, Clutch & Shoes – H&M //  Top – Zara  //  Jacket – F21  //  Bracelet – c/o Atterley Road
Toronto is in the midst of it’s International Film Festival.  That means, screenings and events galore.  My favorite kind of industry or TIFF party is the kind that calls for what I like to call, “casual glam.”  To me that’s when you get dressed up and glamorous up but not in a formal dress kind of way.  I love that I could take out my new pleather pants out for a spin for just such a party.
I think you’ll be seeing pleather pants a lot from me this season.  I love leather and pleather accents and now they’re everywhere!  Used to be that I would find that single gem semi-annually that had pleather accents.  Id’ snap it up in a second.  And now it’s everywhere.  For a pleather hog like me it’s a veritable wonderland!

p.s.  I tried to do Jon at Evoke Salon proud by recreating the soft waves look he gave me after my recent haircut.  Passable, but there’s no substitute for the pro!

Rod Stewart’s Lovechild

Jacket – Threadsence   //   Shirt – hand me down  //   Jeans – AE  // Boots – DIYed by me  //  Sunnies & Necklace – F21

I found this Rod Stewart shirt in the donate bag at my mom’s house.  I think it was my sisters.  Anyway, I cut and altered it to fit me, and now I think it’s the best ironic t-shirt ever.  You see, though I’m not a fan of Rod Stewart, my mom is.  So much so, that if they had ever met in the 80’s I’m pretty sure I would’ve been their illegitimate love child.

So really, this post should go out to my Dad in another life.  Love you man.

A Soft Caress Of The Wind

Kimono – Threadsence  //  Dress H&M  //  Necklace – Lustre Boutique  //  Shoes – unknown

There’s something about a warm breeze.  Something so joyful and, let’s be honest, sexy about it.  A warm breeze is like a lovers caress through your hair and on your skin.  It’s soothing, and comforting, and full of promise.  A freeing of inhibitions, and a reckless abandon now only left to the optimism of youth.  We all need more warm breezes.

Where Does The Time Go?

Dress – F21  //  Shoes – I forget  //  Belt – Threadsence  //  Necklace – I forget
A question that’s been on my mind for a few days now.  Somehow,  the summer is over and I’ve got a big girl sleeping in her room.  The pool is closed, and school’s in.  The baby crib is gone, and a double bed is in.  The weather turns cooler, and the days get shorter.  The baby furniture is replaced with “big girl” desk and shelves.
Where does the time go?  I had heat and sun and long days of sun.  I had a baby in a crib that could barely stand.  Now I have crisp and cool breezes.  Now I have a grown up little girl.

Mullet Dress

Dress – Lulus   //  Fedora- unknown  //  Shoes & Sunnies – F21
I’m still shooting Synchronicity this week.  But this was one outfit from the very day before we went into production.  This was my casual day to run errands for the shoot, and generally do producery type stuff that I won’t bore you with the details of.  Plus, it was hot -so a light summer dress was key.
Now I need to get more than 4 hours of sleep before I’m back on set.
p.s.  I think the name “mullet dress” is possibly the best thing ever.  And I will wear one just for the name alone.

Dress For Your Girl

Dress & Bag – H&M //Shoes – I forget  //  Rings – F21  //  Earrings – very old, don’t remember where from
One of my girlfriends was having a birthday party at a fun bar.  There was going to be a great bunch of artists hanging out and having a wonderful night, and I didn’t want to miss the chance to celebrate the birth of one awesome lady.
I thought about how we dress up for for boyfriends and for husbands, but I don’t think we dress up enough for our girlfriends.  They’re the ladies who are with us through ups and downs, and through all those boyfriends *and sometimes husbands* I think they deserve our effort to look our very best for them on their nights.
So I made sure I put in effort for my girl, Vee.  I even wore heels.  Now that’s true friendship, am I right?

One of the ModaMama sponsors Ever.Mi Crush is having a huge sale.  You should totally check it out.

Giddy About Atterley Road

Sweater, Bracelet, and Necklace – c/o Atterley Road  //  Top – Zara  //  Shorts & Sunnies – F21  //  Shoes – Payless
The fabulous and chic Atterley Road has opened a US online store.  This shop has some drool worthy pieces, and I spent a long, long time choosing what I would like to feature here.
The Fairisle Stitch Cardi Coat seemed like a natural choice since I can wear it now on cooler evenings, and it’ll be a great mix and match piece in the Fall and Winter.  It’s a piece on its own, but I love that the neutral palette make it an easy piece to pair with other patterns and colors.  I can see this warm and chunky layer being around for many seasons.  It’s timeless and still unique.  Plus, it’s a great sweater to curl up in on cold nights. But I don’t want to really think about that just yet!
And the jewelry!  Oh my.  I chose the Multi Spike Bracelet because it’s just so freakin’ cool.  It made me think of a really chic Mad Max movie – spiked but super glam at the same time.  That’s a thing right?
While perusing the site, I found a new company that Atterley Road stocks – Made.  The pieces are made in Kenya in and environmental and socially conscious fashion.  What better way to stay chic than to support companies with a mantra like this?  And the jewelry is really beautiful.  This necklace in fact attracted me because of it’s simple interest.  Not too much, but still fascinating to look at.  It’s one of those timeless things you’ll wear for years.  Or at least I will.
That’s what I like most about Atterley Road I think:  the items are unique and still timeless so that you will find yourself reaching for them again and again for years. As you can tell, I’m a bit excited by this new shop.

Unecessarily Long Story Of One Dress

Dress -Evil Twin via Threadsence  //  Boots – Feet First  //  Sunnies – F21
Once upon a time I was perusing the internet fashion shops again and a saw a dress.  It was fascinating.  It wasn’t cute, or sexy, or beautiful, or sweet.  It didn’t grab me in any of those ways.  It sparked my curiosity and my imagination.  It was unique.  It had strange cut outs and slits, and strange tie dyed patterns.  I didn’t know what to make of it except that I stared at it for a long long time.
I didn’t know if I would ever wear it.  But it didn’t matter as it was far too expensive for me. *at $126 it’s more than this artist can afford to spend on one dress*
Several months later it was in the sale section of the site.  Again, I looked at it for a long long time.  I wasn’t sure it would be something I would ever really wear.  Would it just be a waste of money and hang ignored in my closet?  Would this be one of those things I would kick myself for later?  I didn’t know.  But even the sale price wasn’t enough for me to risk it.  Even for this fascinating dress.
Then.  Then it happened.  A huge semi-annual blow out.  The second I clicked on the blow out and saw this dress in the listings for $15 and in my size I knew that there could be no more hesitation.  It was kismet.  This dress had intrigued me for months.  I was absorbed in the architectural detail of it. And I knew that even if I never wore it, if I thought it a mistake later, my curiosity was worth the $15.
It was fate.  Now the dress and I have met, and we love each other.  We know we are two peas in a pod.  Two weird, fascinating creatures finally come together.

I Got Hit By A Car

Tee – NowhereBad  //  Shorts, Sunnies, & Yellow Bracelet – F21  //  Shoes – Payless // Black cuff – Ebay
That’s right.  You read that right.  Just about 30 minutes before I took this photo I got hit by a car.  I was whizzing along on that bike of mine when an idiot car performed a last minute and illegal right turn with about half a second of warning from his blinker.  I immediately hit my brakes and turned my bike into the car so that I hit and slid along the vehicle instead of hitting it straight on at full speed and flipping over the rear windshield.
As soon as I did a quick diagnostic and ascertained that I was fine, as was my bike, I started yelling at the idiot driver.  He of course was full of excuses.  But I just kept yelling at him explaining every thing he did wrong – and there was a lot of things he did wrong.  I know because I am not only a pedestrian, but a cyclist, and a driver.  I know.  Oh I know.  And I wanted him to know that next time his actions could very well kill someone.
Maybe yelling wasn’t the best course, but it’s my reaction to a scare like that.  Because I was momentarily scared and prepping in an instant to use all my Kung Fu fall training to hopefully survive that man’s mistake.
What is sad is he did this illegal turn because he was probably rushing to get to where he was going and thought this quick shortcut would get him there 30 seconds faster.  30 seconds.  Hopefully, he won’t value those 30 seconds as much next time.
Or at least looks in his friggin’ side view mirror first!
p.s.  I’m okay.  I’ve just got one gruesome bruise on my hip.

Constant Photobombs

Dress – ASOS //  Zebra necklace – Lustre  //  Belt – Threadsence  //  Boots – Feet First  //  Socks – F21  //  Bag – Matt by Matt&Nat
The one sure thing about being a Mama trying to take some fashion photos is that you’re going to get photobombed by some sticky fingers and kissy faces.  They don’t realize – or care – that you’re trying to do something.  The most important thing in the world is that you look – “Hey Mom!  It’s a truck!”
Oh well.  At least you get to see the outfit she picked out for herself.  Matching pink is what all the cool three year olds are wearing.
