Well, despite ranting and raving the weather has started to turn.  The leaves are redder and the sun more orange.  It’s here: Fall.  It’s here and that means soon it will be chilled.  Soon there will be more layers.

But while there’s this tiny moment of warmth amid the red I’m going to indulge myself with kimonos in all their glory before they’re hidden under layers of knit.

Day of Shooting

Navy High Neck Dress – c/o Wallis  //  Tights – Target  // Boots – Aldo  //  Necklace – Homegrown Boutique

This past Sunday I did a special promotional shoot.  After a bit of a crisis to start the day – gear breaking, and all the stores closed, getting across town to borrow from a friend – it was a great day filled with a variety of fabulous subjects.

I had picked this lovely shift dress to wear that day for two simple reasons: comfort and style.  The style was business professional and appropriate for all the new clients I met.  And the comfort, well that speaks for itself – I spent a whole day shooting in the studio and the dress just moved with me throughout.

This is one of those pieces that looks great and just gets out of your way to let you go about your day.  That’s a win in my books.

Leaves Are Falling….

…so we’re firmly into Fall.  The layering begins. I do love the golden light that drowns the richer colors.  I do love the tones that start to dominate the city.  But I deeply lament the end of the warmth.  It feels like I’m breaking up with the Sun.  It feels like we’re giving each other the parting kiss goodbye.

And I don’t like that.  Absence does not make the heart grow fonder.  As much as I love the rich hues of Fall, my heart will always lie with the bright and vivid hues of Summer.

Muffin Top Thigh High Socks

Thigh high socks are so cute.  I love layering them on bare legs and over tights.  But it seems that every time I do there’s this tightness and almost a muffin top roll thing that my legs do.  I never see that on any of the pictures on the internet. *I know they’re all photoshopped so that might be edited away too*  It’s one of those little pet peeves.  Like, I know my legs aren’t shaped weird so how come I get this roll?  And what is their secret?

You know, ’cause it’s like high school.  Everyone else is in on the secret except me.  Spill people.  Spill.  Whats the secret to non-muffin top thigh high socks?  What am I missing here?

Neutrality

Generally I’m against it.  I’m against is sartorially, and in a more broad metaphorical way too.  It’s non-committal, wishy-washy, and easy.

To dress neutral is a cop out because you know it’s going to look good, you don’t have to think about anything.  And by not thinking about things, you never really consider where you stand.  You never have to say that you’re this or that – boho, vintage, a pink lover, a hater of florals.  You never have to actually risk anything.

I’m always skeptical of and suspicious of people who only wear neutrals – because if you can’t commit and take a stand sartorially *where it’s arguably the easiest since there’s nothing on the line* then where else are you copping out?  Politically?  Socially?  Emotionally?

I know, you didn’t expect that today did you?

*This post has been brought to you by a woman who rarely cops out sartorially, politically, socially, or emotionally….except when she hasn’t slept for six nights and her brain has temporarily turned to mush*

Early morning rushes.  That’s my new reality.  Since my girl has started school the morning rush to get lunch ready, get breakfast ready, get her ready, get myself ‘ready’, and get out the door has created a new sort of wave to the day.

There’s this big push int he morning, and then the slow meander back home.  This morning for instance I just needed to get out my PJs and so I grabbed the things that were out and threw them on.  It was the stuff that I had just nabbed from a clothing swap I hosted.  And I’m pleased to say that thinking creatively about fashion has made it so that I don’t look like a total mess when I have three minutes to get dressed.

Hope in Exhaustion: A Sartorial Discussion

It seems these pants are being worn with white tops and buns.  But I swear it’s accidental.  What they are really worn with is exhaustion.  Exhaustion is the motivator, and it just so happens that exhaustion goes with white tops – less to think about – and buns – less to do.

Plus a warm sweater, ’cause it’s chilly.  Really exhaustion.  But this goes to show * I hope* that being an exhausted mother, with a husband away on a business trip so no help, doesn’t mean you can’t have some modicum of style.

*Again… I hope*

The ability to throw on a dress and hat and go out the door.  That’s the beauty that is summer, and warm weather in general.  I’m really going to miss this beautiful ability as the temperature drops.  It’s going to be about smart layering to maximize warmth as opposed to the ease and freedom to run out the door on a whim.

Summer, we’ve parted too soon.

Still trying to figure out this new schedule and life change.  In the meantime, I think my love for the fringe and the tassel is firmly in place.  Apparently, it’s also made for layering.  I have no issue with that.
