I have a few pet peeves.  One being the inappropriate use of the colon and the semi-colon.  They're not just one half of an emoticon people! But I also have this personal clothing pet peeve.  I won't wear one label, or store, head to toe.  I can't do it.  Something inside me rebels at the very notion. Even if the items are from different labels, but are from the same store, I can't wear them together in one outfit.   Maybe it's a silly notion of non-conformity and by wearing one store/label head to toe I'm somehow relinquishing my creativity.  I really don't know why that is, but it is.  Do you have any weird quirks like that?

5 Power Things

28.4.12

Want a power trip?  Become a parent.

As parents we have the ultimate power in our hands, that of shaping another human being's entire being.  It's a great power, but also a scary one.  I often wonder about how to help my Baby Girl become the most full woman she can possibly be, without the hangups that I seem to carry with me.  This article was good to read about the 5 Powerful things you can say to your child.  Here's the Coles Notes:

1. "I like you" - 'I love you' is unconditional,  'I like you' means I like who your are.
2. "Tell Me More" - Don't settle for a 'fine' ask for more.  Show interest and that you're listening.
3. "You're a Fast Learner" - "Smart" equates intelligence, "fast learner" implies the willingness to work hard.  It's about the effort when faced with a challenge, not the result.
4. "We All Make Mistakes" -  Our children fear not living up to our expectations, share your own mistakes and help them relax about theirs.
5. "Let's Read" - A good alternative to "let's play catch" et al. that emphasizes learning and intelligence.

Things to think about as we all go through our days.
What this makes me really think about is how good a job I do leading by example.  Do I show interest, do I work hard, and do I emphasize learning in myself?  We are our children's primary role models after all. so what am I showing her?

Elusive Eloquence

May I introduce you to the greatest thing in taking self photos, the remote control.  I got mine in the mail a few days back and it makes taking self-portraits with your camera and tripod so much easier!  You do a few test shots to find the lighting and position you like then, snap, snap, snap away.  Love it!

I'm not very eloquent lately in my posts, that probably has to do with the fact that it's very busy around here with auditions, shoots, rehearsals and table reads.  That, and planning a bridal shower.   Eloquence will return on or after May6th....I hope.

p.s. I revamped my acting site. Take a look!

True Story:
Baby's going to be a genius.
I know every parent says and thinks that, but I'm right.
She walked into the room with a book.
Sat down on the couch, opened it, and remained there reading intently for the next several minutes.
The book was Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing."
See I told you.

Finally, after much scheduling issues and dealing with budget/tax issues *mostly those* I'm going to join a new Kung Fu school today in Toronto.  It's been so long since I've studied at a studio, and I'm going to have to unlearn quite a few things, but I'm really looking forward to training and studying again.  I'm no Jet-Li but I do love the art and really, since I have no delusions that I'll ever be Jet-Li, that's all that matters.

I used to stress that I couldn't throw myself 100% into everything because that's what it took to be the best, but I've realized that I don't need to be the best at everything.  There's a lot of things I love, and as long as I'm doing what I love that's what matters right?  On that note, have a great day doing what you love!

Pear-Apple

Made a yummy treat:  homemade warn juice!

Peeled and cored 4 apples, 3 pears, and one half of a lemon.  Juiced them, heated it up on the stove over low heat and topped it off with a huge dollop of cinnamon.

Nothing better on a cold, rainy afternoon!

We've had a few sleepless nights at Chez Haughton.  The little one is sick.  She's so stuffed up that she has to breathe through her mouth and therefore can't self-soothe by sucking her thumb.  This means that she needs to sleep with me in order to be comforted back to sleep.  So, Andrew's on the futon in her room, while me, her, and the dog try to get some rest in our room.

Only the dog is any rest.

But smelling her and cuddling in close all night is a rare treasure that almost makes up for the stolen sleep.

In related news, Chez Haughton is now serving coffee with every breakfast.

Everything I seem to want to say today feel inadequate.  Somehow my mind can't settle on one thought, or even a trio of thoughts that I could coherently share with you.  Words don't seem to want to make sense and arrange themselves in any way that could convey the feelings, thoughts, and emotions tumbling around my brain.

Excitement, whirlwind, hope, fear, exhaustion, joy.  All these seem to be swimming inside right now.  It's a good feeling, don't get me wrong.  It's a feeling of being wrapped up in so many projects.  Running around from audition, to callback, to event, to event.  But it's a feeling that has left me in a perplexed state of mind.  So I'm going to have some herbal tea, and settle in for an episode of something.  Baby's sleeping and I've got a brief respite.

Happy weekend!

Playing Hookie

If you read my acting site, or twitter, or facebook, you know I'm having a busy, busy week.  I've got auditions, shoots, callbacks, and film premieres.  So I hope you'll pardon me as I play hookie today and do a callback and get ready for the film premiere.  In the meantime, I'll share with you the teaser trailer of Posthuman who went and got itself a fancy new distributor. *You'll catch some fun shots of me!*

Tonight's companion is Senor Pinot Grigio and two episodes of Community.  We're old friends, Community, not Senor Grigio to be clear. Senor Grigio and I are acquaintances.   Not often together, but we like a light hearted chat from time to time.  Tonight we're discussing thoughts long forgotten and how to banish them at unwanted times...that, and how I can get the perfect Britta curl. I can't ever get it quite right.   Gillian Jacobs, what is your secret?

p.s. Andrew's in Texas and I really want him to get me some cowboy boots - size 6.5/7 if you're wondering. It's a bit of a fantasy.

Sitting here awake at 5am, my mistakes come to haunt me. The whole house is still, except for a dog that moves it's ear and opens one eye to watch  me tip toe out of the bedroom and down the hall. I can't sleep.  My mind is racing with opportunities unfulfilled, roads taken in error, and tasks yet to be done.  I tread my way down to the kitchen where the kettle sits idly waiting for my appearance, and meet an old friend, Mr. Earl Grey.  We sit together a while, but even he can't shake the shadows in my mind.

That's why as a rule, I don't like to be awake at 5am.

This weekend went by so fast!  Actually the whole week went by in a blur.  I've been so busy and excited.  I'll have plenty of updates on my acting site soon - I did something really fun and cool this weekend!  And plenty of updates coming up on the picture site - did a great shoot recently and you can see a sneak peak here, but for now I have to go rest.  Seriously, my doctor says I'm suffering from signs of exhaustion and I need to slow down, which I guess I should take seriously, but...fat chance of that happening with my life as it is.  It's like a great dichotomy - I know I need to slow down, but I really don't want to, you know?  I guess I'll give it a shot though!

Hope you guys are great. Can't wait to share all these amazing fun times I've been having with you.
Stay tuned!

Orchestra of Women

14.4.12

Recently there has been speculation and criticism over Ashley Judd's appearance.  Rank speculation and discussion prompted Ms. Judd to write this essay as a response.  I encourage you to read it.

Recently, an entire issue of Marie Claire was dedicated to the continuing unequal treatment of women.  I've come across this phenomenon in the arts as well.  As a female actor and photographer, I often come face to face with the attitude that for some reason my male compatriots time is more valuable than mine.  This is done in small and subtle, but powerful ways.  Often times the undermining of the female consciousness comes in the very art form that I work in daily.  I remember an acting teacher saying, "For women, it's important that you look good while listening because most scripts are men talking at women and women listening."  Said years ago, this has stayed with me as I progress through this medium, mostly because time and time again I'm faced with a script in which this is true. While there are directors and writers challenging that norm, and I applaud them, they are far too few.

Some of you may challenge me saying that I, as a fashion blogger, may be falling victim to this exact system.   I say that my fashion, my love of the creative play of dressing, is an expression of me and for myself.  It's my canvas since I can't draw, it's my instrument since I can't play.  And it's my voice, not the nodding of my head while a man talks at me.

I add my voice to the orchestra of women shouting for equal treatment and dissolution of the patriachical gaze.

I've been doing the sock bun for a long time now, and it used to be that you were embarrassed to admit that you had footwear in your hair.  It was like showing your knickers or your slip - a lady never does that.  Now it's become a source of blogging pride to show exact details of this, frankly, lazy ass hairdo.  It's actually really amusing to me. *p.s. if you want a tutorial just google it, there are literally dozens of them and I'm not adding to that pile*  What's next?  Do I show you how I use a hair elastic to keep my pants up?

Digressing just a touch...can we just take a moment to appreciate how the right pants, combined with the right pose make it look like I have a smokin' hot J.Lo booty in that first shot?  Usually, I've got curves like Kate Moss has plus size ad campaigns, but in this shot I've got the booty goin' on!

I wonder if I can get a life size cardboard cutout of this picture and wear it everywhere like those guys at the side of the road advertizing car washes.  It's like, "No, this here in the picture with the J.Lo butt is the real me."

True Story:
Speaking of things you don't admit too...
Baby put on my bra and rubbed my perfume on herself and pranced around my bedroom.
How does a 22 month old prance?
Very awkwardly and unsteadily, but prance she did.

I was recently cuddling with my baby and had this crazy thought:  She's part of my body.  Well, not actually, we're not Siamese mother-daughter of anything, but she was grown and created out of my body material.  She grew inside me - we shared a blood supply.  That's a freaky thought, that you share a blood supply with another person.  I was a little freaked out.  Then Andrew said, " Yeah, you did good. High five!" and she grinned her toothy grin right on cue.  I did do good.

On the same note though...

I quit!  She's in bed, Andrew away for the night at work and I quit!  I quit being a mama.  I'm going to go watch Stargate SG1, play Civilization on my computer, and have a stiff drink of good ol' scotch.
This Mama's off the clock!

How do you know you're a nerd?  Your husband comes home and tells you he has a big surprise for you.  Then he pulls out a dinosaur board game.  And you light up and squeal just a little because you've been lusting after it for a while now.  That's how you know.

Don't feel sorry for him.  He knows who he married.

Alien Zombie Baby

Do you watch The Walking Dead?  Have you seen the season finale?  It kicked butt!  I saw it late because I've been busy, but here's a thought.  In the show they've discovered that they are all infected and that when they die - no matter how they die - they all come back as zombies.  You don't have to be bitten to turn into a zombie.  Also, one of the main characters is pregnant.

So here's where my train of thought goes:

If she miscarries in her third trimester, does her baby turn into a zombie?  Does it claw it's way out like that thing in Alien?  'Cause though it would be really sad, it would also be kind of really cool.

Yeah, I know.
If you think that's bad, imagine how I feel.  I have to be around myself all the time!
